Google is spreading its wings in yet another direction - this time as a network provider, offering super-fast broadband to thousands of US homes. It plans to build a fiber-optic network offering speeds of up to 1Gbps (gigabit per second) to up to 500,000 homes.

I know a lot of you are able to get FIOS and are content with it, good for you, but don't let your initial apathy stop you from voting up Ft Wayne (or your community).. Google is looking at bringing speeds of UP TO A GIGABIT to its new network. As a side benefit, all of Google's services will certainly be absolutely lightning fast on their own network... anyone have a count on how many various apps/sites Google has out there? Smile

Fort Wayne is probably the last place in the world that will get something like this (it's probably against some regional monopoly law anyhow!), but I went ahead with the nomination, maybe they'll realize we were one of the first communities with FIOS, and a foothold here for Google means competition and hopefully a re-focusing on continuing to roll out the networks to outlying areas such as mine.

Google's Question:

Why should Google build a fiber to the home network where you live?

My Answer:

Fort Wayne was one of the pilot locations for Verizon FiOS. It is also one of the engineering centers for the FiOS network. I, personally, feel that it would be a great PR move to come into Verizon's backyard & show them up by offering vastly superior service at a competitive price.

(I was a contracted engineer for FiOS btw)

Google's Question:
Quote::
Describe the quality of your home Internet service customer support:

My Response:

Speaking with Verizon customer support is like teaching monkeys to use a bidet.

Added. Someone should start a facebook group, those are kinda popular. I might start one tonight when i get off work unless someone has the time to get it done prior to then!
Lets give Verizon a run for their money and force them to be better so that the rest of the country can benifit!

And to quit raising their prices by 15 percent since August 09.

Almost ready to go back to comcast. But its so hard to lose the higher speeds! Razz
